The other night my room-mate and I were sitting around and sharing stories about cringe-inducing confessions of undying (and most definitely unrequited) love. The affliction of unrequited love is well-documented from the point of view of the lover; but what about that beloved, who is, shall we say, less than impressed? Not to be bitchy (well, maybe a little bit) it's a bit of a hard spot. Maybe this is a friend who you wished was only platonic. Maybe it's a stranger. Maybe it's just awkward. But when someone tells you out of the blue that they love you and always will, it's always a wee bit weird. You don't know quite how to deal; there's nothing to say that a) won't hurt them and b) won't make you seem like a callous bitch. And really, the cruel lady love motif is a hackneyed literary trope that needs to be thrown out like Petrarch's unwashed codpiece. so, I say, beloveds unite! You're not a bad person for not loving someone back, especially when that love letter is soaked in guilt and responsibility,not to mention, terrible, terrible poetry. To help us get through these kinda painfully awkward confessions, we've started up a blog collecting these love-lorn missives. Don't get us wrong; the purpose is not to mock. well, mostly. But these gems need a forum and an audience - a place where we can all get together to smile and cringe our way through these memories. Because we've all had to awkwardly deal with someone's emo heartache. Sometimes all you can do is laugh, share, and maybe die inside just a little.

background: Ousman and i were friends when i was working in the Gambia and have kept in touch once in awhile via email since i left. i knew he liked me, so i have tried to keep the tone of correspondence quite light to avoid situations such as this. this email, though, has left me at a loss as to how to respond and feeling like a big jerk. is there anything that can be said at this point, or is it best to say nothing at all?

Great feeling after recieving this mail from you, bcos have been wondering why you never write back to me.

LISA, I have never tell you this , but i am seriously IN LOVE WITH YOU. when you where in the Gambia here , i never tell you when you where here bcos you might think a white lady ( Toubab ) in the Gambia that why. Lisa since i first set my eyes on you it touches my heart so deeply that i realize how one could fall in love instaneously.

I can never stop thinking about you, that why i always write you and i feel is very necessary to let you know that i love you so much .

Hi Ousman,

I hope you're well. I'm doing well, but very busy with work and school - sorry I didn't reply to your last email yet. I have one month left of school, and then I have to look for a job for the summer. How is the Gambia? It must be getting warm by now. Here we have 3 feet of snow on the ground, so it has been hard to walk or drive anywhere. It is getting sunny though, and I hope it will all melt soon. I wish I was back there though... I would love to go to the beach right now!
